How the visa works
The Turkish work visa is a specific category, separate from tourist or business visas. You can only apply for it after your Turkish employer has received work permit approval from the Ministry of Labour. The sequence is:
- Employer files the work permit application in Turkey.
- Ministry of Labour reviews and approves.
- Approval is communicated to the Turkish embassy in Islamabad.
- You attend the embassy with your documents and collect the work visa.
- You travel to Turkey on the work visa and collect the physical work permit card after arrival.
The visa alone does not give you the right to work - it gives you the right to enter Turkey to begin the employment covered by the already-approved permit.
Visa types to know
- Work visa (study/work type) - what you need. Single-entry, validity usually 90-180 days from issuance; you must enter Turkey within this window.
- Tourist visa - not acceptable for work. Even if someone tells you "just come on tourist visa and convert" - it does not work for industrial trades under current rules.
- e-Visa - Pakistan is not currently eligible for Turkish e-Visa in all categories; check the current list. Either way, e-Visa is for tourism, not work.
- Student visa - for enrolled students only; does not authorise full-time work.
Before you apply
You cannot apply for a work visa speculatively. You must have:
- A signed employment contract with a Turkish employer.
- Work permit approval from the Turkish Ministry of Labour, communicated to the embassy.
- All supporting documents from Pakistan (BE&OE, medical, police).
These are normally coordinated by your recruitment agency. If no one has explained the permit approval status to you, ask - you should not go to the embassy without it.
Required documents for the embassy appointment
- Original passport (18+ months validity remaining).
- Employment contract, original and copy (in Turkish, ideally with English translation).
- Work permit approval reference number (the embassy verifies with Ankara).
- BE&OE protector seal on passport (Pakistan emigration clearance).
- Medical fitness certificate.
- Police character certificate.
- Completed visa application form.
- Passport-size photos per embassy spec (usually 2-4).
- Visa fee - in cash at the counter or via prepaid bank receipt depending on current embassy procedure.
- Proof of address in Pakistan (utility bill or similar).
- Educational and trade certificates - originals, in case asked to show.
Bring originals plus one complete photocopy set of every document. Missing something causes a rescheduling that adds days or weeks to your timeline.
Booking an embassy appointment
Visa appointments in Islamabad are booked online via the official Turkish consulate / visa service website. Your agency will typically handle the booking. If you book yourself:
- Book the specific category "Work Visa" - not "Tourism" or "General".
- Choose a date at least 5 working days after you have all documents in hand.
- Keep the appointment confirmation email - you'll need to show it at the gate.
What happens at the embassy
A typical appointment day:
- Arrive 30 minutes before appointment. Bring only your documents, passport, phone, and a pen. Other items may need to be left outside.
- Security check at entrance.
- Counter submission - you hand in your forms and documents. The officer verifies each against the original passport and the permit database.
- Biometric capture - fingerprints and photograph.
- Brief interview - why you are going to Turkey, who your employer is, what job you'll do. Keep answers short and consistent with the paperwork.
- Visa fee payment.
- You receive a receipt and a pickup or courier arrangement for your passport with the visa.
Processing time
Once the embassy has your file, processing usually takes 5-15 working days. Factors:
- Simple, complete files - 5-7 days.
- Files needing clarification - 10-20 days.
- Peak season (summer, Ramadan-adjacent) - add a few days.
Once issued, your passport is returned with the visa stamp.
Why work visa applications get rejected
- No work permit in system. The employer has not actually obtained the permit, or it was rejected. You'll never get the visa without this.
- Mismatched information. Passport name, contract name, and application name don't match. Fix before applying.
- Expired or short-validity passport. Renew first.
- Prior visa refusals. Schengen refusals, UK refusals, or prior Turkish refusals must be declared and may slow processing.
- Missing BE&OE clearance. Pakistan-side clearance is mandatory.
- Criminal record. Serious convictions result in rejection.
- Inconsistent story at interview. Keep your answers aligned with what's in your paperwork.
Entry into Turkey
Once you have the visa, you must enter Turkey before the visa's validity expires. At Istanbul airport:
- Immigration officer will ask your purpose - "work, company name, employer's city".
- They stamp your entry date.
- Collect baggage and exit to meet your employer's driver.
Within 30 days of entry, collect your physical work permit card from the provincial labour directorate. Your employer will guide you. After collection, you are free to travel, open bank accounts, and live in Turkey for the duration of the permit.
